An Invitation to Excel
For ensembles, a trip to The Disney Honors is a once-in-a-lifetime event.by Keith Martin
Imagine being selected as one of the country's finest high-school bands, orchestras, or choral ensembles; performing before a panel of distinguished adjudicators; receiving awards at a celebration gala; and getting your own private Disney Theme Park party to boot.
That unique experience awaits student performers invited to participate in The Disney Honors National Concert Band, Orchestra and Choral Invitational, which takes place at Walt Disney World Resort each spring. Performers are evaluated by leading music educators and are entertained in the park along with their fellow musicians.
"It's a dream program for the advanced ensemble ready for an extraordinary experience," says Jung-Ho Park, the internationally renowned music director and a returning Disney Honors evaluator. "There is not another program like this in the world. The Disney Honors is one of the most unique and valuable programs a director can consider for their ensembles. I am able to share my best advice with the groups in a healthy, non-competitive atmosphere."
The Disney Honors also features a one hour presentation conducted by a distinguished music educator, and a post-performance clinic with a nationally recognized evaluator. The program does not include competition or rankings. The Disney Honors Celebration Gala concludes the event. During the gala, each ensemble is recognized and presented with The Disney Honors Award, and each performer receives a medal commemorating their participation in the program.
Ensembles have to qualify for participation in The Disney Honors. Directors of groups seeking to participate must submit a completed application form, a recording of their ensemble, and three nomination forms from music educators and leaders familiar with the group's program. A select Disney panel reviews the material, and chosen ensembles receive official invitations.
The Disney Honors is endorsed by MENC: The National Association for Music Education. It is part of the Walt Disney Performing Arts Programs, which offers instrumental, vocal, and dance groups a unique experience at the Walt Disney World Resort. The next Disney Honors is planned for March 7-10, 2008.
